its been a long time since the barriers between this world and the demon world were cut down.. the beginning was really bad, a lot of humans died. the strongest became demon slayers, my ancestors. My family was particularly well known. My great great great great great grandfather Jigoku was legendary, its been said if it hadnt been for him, the entire human race wouldve been lost. He killed countless demons, hundreds of thousands, and his power grew so great his body was no longer completely human. A demon slayer grows stronger with every demon life he takes, a part of that demon power forever imprisoned in it's killer's body, aiding in the killing of more, stronger demons. an enternity of being insulted, the only real hell a demon can know.
lesser humans, unfortunately, become tainted by this evil power and it transforms them into some bastardized version of a demon, a human-demon hybrid, low class and unintelligent, only able to act on it's insatible urges for killing. only those whose true intentions are pure, their inner self stronger than the will of evil, can prove themselves to be demon slayers.
My grandfather Jigoku was the first to learn how to harness this power to do good, and with it he saved enough human life to ensure it's survival. By the end of his life he was nearly immortal, nothing could truly kill him. No, my grandfather, in truth, is still alive and with us to this day. He used his life energy to erect a great barrier, one that could hold a million people and keep them safe for all time, so long as they remain inside it's walls. From this barrier alone the human race has been able to survive the apocalypse. Before his symbolic death, Jigoku bore and trained many sons to ensure the human race's survival throughout this new dark time. His sacrifice gave us a home base, now his decedants fight the war.
I am Akujin(?), a seventh generation demon slayer, I was taught by my father, he by his father, and so on all the way back to Jigoku and his sons. My family has dedicated their lives.. no, my family was CREATED to hunt and kill demons. I carry on my grandfather's noble work, protecting the human race from exstinction from the merciless demons who plague our world!

the living barrier

the barrier that keeps us safe is often called the living barrier, because it is alive, it is the ancient demon slayer Jigoku, always watching over us, protecting us.. because you see, Jigoku was very wise and understood well that hiding in one spot was no life and no way to defend oneself. This is just home base for the fight of the ages. He did not intend for us to sit here and wait it out! It is an immensely strong barrier capable of holding any demon, no matter how strong or terrible to pass through, but in order for humans to venture out to get supplies or fight demons....
humans can pass through the barrier as they please, but as each one reenters the barrier they are being judged, by Jigoku himself, whether they are worthy of being allowed back in. For most of our residents this isnt a problem, but every so often you have a bad seed.. someone who goes out killing demons just to get stronger. They cant handle the evil coursing through their veins and become tainted. Jigoku is no fool, once a person has started down that path, they are never allowed to return. Many die completely unaware, coming home from killing their first demon, unwittingly walking right into the barrier and ZAP! Barbequed on the spot. Nothing left but a charred corpse and some ash.
Let me tell you, finding their charred remains laying just outside the barrier is the worst way to find out your son or daughter went down the wrong path. Or any family member. Friend. Or lover..and if you happen to be walking by.. the right spot at the right time.. and you actually see someone get zapped, someone you could very well know.. and watch their face contort, rapidly and viciously into so many different emotions, shock, pain, confusion, fear, regret, sadness, desperation, anger and inner turmoil, you can actually see everything in their life that lead them down the wrong path flashing before their eyes during their last few agonzing minutes of life. Jigoku makes no acceptions. Not even for his own blood. "No impure soul shall threaten the inside of these walls."
And the barrier is 100% self-sustainable and never has to come down. Every time a demon is zapped, the barrier gets stronger, taking in a portion of that demon's power, so Jigoku has been sitting here, lying dormant, gradually getting stronger for about 150 years. Every attack, every dimwit, every demon insect or bird that accidentally flies into it, all their combined power refortifying the barrier every day, weak and strong.

demon slayers can only breed with other demon slayers. Jigoku found this out the hard way. Jigoku was married to a woman he loved, before the apocolypse, they had not had any children yet, they were stilla young married couple. When the apocolypse broke out and Jigoku found his place as a demon slayer, the new powerful energy inside him carried on to his offspring. Jigoku's wife died bearing their first child, a daughter. The girl was born stronger than any full grown soldier and her power tore her mother apart from the inside during her gestation. Jigoku was never the same after his wife's death, and many believe this was when he had given up on life. Its what made him such a great warrior, absolutely no fear of death, and why he had no qualms with giving up his life to make the barrier.
The rest of Jigoku's children were born from different demon slayer women. He never again married or cared about love. He wanted perfect soldiers to help fight this war. And demon slayer women were strong enough to carry demon slayer babies, rarely with complications.
Our demon slayer families are divided up, decendants from Jigoku and one of the women demon slayers. All the children shared in Jigoku's demon slaying teachings, as well as many of their mothers were also taught by Jigoku, but each one raised their children in their own way, and being a demon slayer mother, they also trained their children their own way. Each family has a different style, method, weapons, abilities, priorities and techniques, strengths and weaknesses.

I need a nice big project for my portfolio so I can get work, so I figured Id do something fun. Im making my own anime.
The story idea so far takes place after an apocalypse-type event. Currently Im watching Yu Yu Hakusho, which ends in about 30 episodes from where I am, and from the foretell-able parts of the storyline, it looks like theres a very real chance they open up the barrier between human world and demon world. So I got the idea, what if I started a story set AFTER the supposed apocolypse? I would think the best story would be an actual first-hand account of the chaotic aftermath, and something truly different is telling how humankind might be surviving through it. Of course 7 human generations is a drop in the bucket for demon's lifespan, so we get right in the thick of it.
This is kind of like the opening monologue, setting the scene with some backstory, introducing the main character and what the anime is all about, and a perfect showcase for some epic flashback battle art done with limited animation, dynamic coloring and lots of dark posterized edges. The rest after that is scattered ideas to flesh out the story. Still adding to it.
im also using this project for a shitton of practice. Im really rusty at story telling, character development, character design and animation. I dont think I have anything set in stone just yet, I might flip the two character names around.. the more I think of it, the more I like Jigoku for a main character, rather than a supporting.
